Chapter 22

Hours earlier.

Misty Lane felt like a princess being courted by a dashing prince.

They hadn’t been seated a minute when Val snagged the sleeve of a waiter and smacked a twenty into his palm. “This is how it is. There’s a lot more for you when we’re done provided you wait on us hand and foot. I so much as wiggle a finger, I want you front and center. Any problems with that?”

“No, sir, none at all,” the waiter said, and grinned greedily. “You’ll have my special attention.”

“Good. First thing is a candle in the middle of our table. And a vase of flowers if you can find one.”

“Will plastic flowers do?”

“If you can’t get real ones. I want this to be romantic. Got me?”

“I’m on it.” The waiter scurried off.

“Romantic?” Misty repeated. She’d suspected how he felt about her but she never figured he’d be so blatant about it.

Val didn’t reply. He had come to a decision. He was going all out to woo her. He had to. The odds were stacked against him. For starters she already had a boyfriend. Second, he might never get to go out with her again. She might refuse, or the boyfriend might raise a stink.

Then there was Cry Baby. Usually Cry Baby let his crew do pretty much what they wanted where their love lives were concerned. But maybe Cry Baby would decree that the crew and the station staff weren’t to fraternize. Or maybe Cry Baby would get the hots for Misty, himself. Either scenario, Val was screwed.

As if all that weren’t enough, Val had the wild card factor to deal with, namely, her parents. Could be, they wouldn’t like their daughter dating an Italian. Could be, they were fundamentalists who’d bristle at their pride and joy dating a Catholic. Not that he ever went to church. But her parents might be the kind who were hardnosed about something like that.

All these factors convinced Val that if he was to act, he must act now. He poured on the Corcione charm. He told nice clean stories and nice clean jokes, strictly PG stuff, stuff Disney would approve of.

Misty was fascinated. Through his eyes she saw the Windy City in all its facets. She walked with him along the breezy shore of Lake Michigan. She visited the Lincoln Park Zoo and the planetarium. The Botanical Gardens interested her immensely. Val had seen so much and done so much that after a while Misty got to thinking about how little she’d seen and done, and she grew sad.

“Am I boring you?” Val instantly asked.

“Not at all.” Misty stared at the candle’s dancing flame. “It’s just that I envy you. I’ve only ever been out of Yuba City a few times. I have no idea what the rest of the world is like.”

“It’s not all it’s cracked up to be.” Val thought of his life on the streets, of the muggings, the knife fights, the killings. He thought of the pimps and the pushers and thirteen-year old streetwalkers and ten-year olds hooked on crack.
